AFRICA CUP. Tom Saintfiet’s Gambia loses the first group match against defending champion Senegal

National coach Tom Saintfiet was unable to surprise against defending champion Senegal with Gambia in his first group match at the African Cup. In Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, “the Scorpions” lost 3-0 on Monday.

Pape Gueye (4.) and Messin Lamine Camara (52., 86.) scored the goals for Senegal, which had to play with one more man for the entire second half. At Gambia, Ebrima Adams was excluded in injury time of the first period after an elbow bump.

Before the match, both countries’ anthems were cut short before the end due to a sound problem, but supporters of both teams finished their anthem a cappella in the stands.

Senegal won the Africa Cup for the first time two years ago and is now one of the favorites. Gambia, also with Saintfiet on the bench, surprisingly reached the quarter-finals at the tournament in Cameroon.

In the other match of group C, Cameroon drew 1-1 against Guinea on Monday. That took the lead after 10 minutes through Mohamed Bayo (10.). Shortly after the break, Franck Magri (51.) equalized for the Indomitable Lions. Guinea, with Mory Konate (Mechelen) in the starting line-up, played a full second half with ten after the red card for captain François Kamano (45.+3).

In the opening match of group D, favorites Algeria and Angola shared the points in Bouaké. The score was 1-1 after goals from the Algerian Baghdad Boundjah (18.) and the Angolan substitute Agostinho Mabululu (67., pen). At Angola, Nurio Fortuna received a yellow card.

Burkina Faso and Mauritania will play the second game in this group on Tuesday.
