Maaseik verliest heenmatch halve finales CEV Cup met 3-1 bij Zenit Sint-Petersburg

Volleyball club Greenyard Maaseik lost its first leg in the semifinals of the CEV Cup for men’s teams on Wednesday evening 3-1 against the Russian top team Zenit St. Petersburg.

The set positions in the Sibur Arena, where many spectators cheered the home team, were 25-20, 23-25, 26-24 and 26-24. The game lasted an hour and 45 minutes.

For Maaseik it is the second defeat in a handful of days. Last Sunday, Joel Banks’ team lost the cup final against Roeselare.

Next Wednesday (March 3, 8.30 p.m.) the return will be played in the Steengoed Arena in Maaseik. The Limburgers will then (due to the corona crisis) not be able to count on the support of their fans.

In the other semi-final, the Russian Dinamo Moscow, the team of Red Dragon Sam Deroo, won 3-1 against the French Montpellier (25-21, 25-16, 13-25 and 25-21). The second leg in France will be played next Thursday (March 4).

Jan Martinez still believes in Maaseik’s final chances

Maaseik went down on Wednesday evening after a creditable match 3-1 at the Russian Zenit in the semifinal of the CEV Cup. Next Wednesday a tough assignment awaits the Limburgers in their own Stoneware Arena. Yet Jan Martinez still believes in the team’s final chances.

“We came here to score some points. We played a good match, together, as a team. The result is not what we expected, but I think the team has played at a high level ”, responded the 23-year-old Argentinian corner player.

“It is important that we remember the positive from this match,” continued Martinez. “Next week we have to try to show the same in the second game so that we can advance to the final. It’s 50/50. That’s the way it is always in volleyball. We have to keep training, keep playing and then the results will follow. ”

Heyrman and Van Hecke do win

Better Belgian news for women. Laura Heyrman and Lise Van Hecke won their first leg in the semifinals of the CEV Cup volleyball against the Serbian Tent Obrenovac with the Italian Saugella Monza with 3-0. The set positions were 25-15, 25-22 and 25-12. The return game will be played next Tuesday (March 2).

In the other semi-final, the French Béziers already defeated the Turkish Galatasaray Istanbul 3-2 on Tuesday. The return is scheduled for next Wednesday (March 3).
