Goffin satisfied after tournament win in Montpellier: “The past months were not easy”

Goffin tevreden na toernooiwinst in Montpellier: “Afgelopen maanden waren niet gemakkelijk”

David Goffin (ATP-15) couldn’t hide his luck on Sunday after his victory in the ATP 250 indoor tournament in Montpellier, the “Open Sud de France” (262,170 euros). The 30-year-old from Liège won the final as the second seed against the Spanish first seed Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP-13), 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 after 2h05 games. For Goffin it is the fifth ATP title.

“Roberto played really well this week, so I knew it was going to be a tough game,” said Goffin. “He is one of the greatest fighters on the circuit and an excellent player. I knew I had to play my best tennis to win this final. And luckily was able to do that from the end of the first set. I was able to come back to 5-5, but he didn’t give up and eventually won that first set. But from that moment on I started to play really well. I am really happy to get back to my best level. The past weeks and months have not been easy. ”

First tournament win since 2017

It was David Goffin’s first final since the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, in the summer of 2019. There he lost to the Russian Daniil Medevedev. His last tournament win was in the summer of 2017, when the native of Liège won the ATP 500 in Tokyo against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

“A final is always special,” says Goffin. “That is the last game of the week and you have to give everything to get the trophy. It’s my fifth tournament win, and it’s all special memories. There have been finals where I had no chance. But then you have to keep looking to improve and fight. I am now happy to see that this is paying off. ”

“Unfortunately there was no audience, but it was a wonderful week. And it gives me the motivation to keep going and come back next year, hopefully for a full stadium then. ”
